A little history of the origins of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is a holiday that is celebrated annually in many countries around the world to honour mothers and mother figures for their love, support, and guidance. The history and origin of Mother’s Day can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where maternal figures were celebrated and honoured for their nurturing and caring nature.
In ancient Greece, the spring festival was dedicated to the mother goddess Rhea, who was considered the mother of all gods and goddesses. In Rome, the festival of Hilaria was celebrated to honour the mother goddess Cybele. The tradition of celebrating motherhood continued through the Middle Ages, where it was celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honour the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus.
The modern-day Mother’s Day, as we know it, has its roots in the United States. The idea of a day to honour mothers was first proposed by a woman named Anna Jarvis in 1908. Anna Jarvis, who was inspired by her own mother’s devotion and sacrifices, wanted to create a day to celebrate all mothers and their contributions to society.
On May 10, 1908, the first official Mother’s Day was celebrated at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, where Anna Jarvis’ mother had taught Sunday school. The holiday gained popularity quickly, and by 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, a national holiday in the United States.
Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated around the world on various dates, although the second Sunday in May remains the most common date for the holiday, in some countries the date differs.
Mother’s Day is celebrated in different ways around the world, but the sentiment remains the same: to honour and appreciate mothers and mother figures for their love, support, and guidance.
You have to commercialize it
Of course, being an American “invention” you couldn’t just let it be a nice day for families to get together to celebrate Mom. Let’s see, how can we monetize this?
Mother’s Day has become one of the most significant sales periods in the retail industry. It is a time to give gifts, cards, and flowers to mothers to show them how much they are loved and appreciated.
Florists and Chocolatiers now depend on this day for a large part of their annual income.
